Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting!

21st World Scout Jamboree

July 27th, - August 8th, 2007

The 21st World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by the Scout Association of the United Kingdom from July 27 until August 8, 2007. It will bring together 40,000 Scouts, Venturers, leaders, and staff for 12 days. They will share adventure, international friendship, personal growth, and development.

In 2007, the centennial year of the founding of the Scouting movement, the jamboree theme will be "One World, One Promise." Sir Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Scouting program, also pioneered the very first jamboree at Olympia in London in 1920.

The Boy Scouts of America participated with 301 Scouts and leaders at the First World Scout Jamboree, and 3,200 American Scouts/leaders are invited to return to the birthplace of Scouting during the summer of 2007.

The 21st World Scout Jamboree will take place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, England. It is within easy reach of both central London and the airports surrounding London.

  • Hylands Park is a large area of rolling green parkland, with patches of woodland and an English country house. It offers an ideal location for the jamboree site.
  • Chelmsford is a local town and has a history stretching back thousands of years. Chelmsford Borough Council owns Hylands Park and is strongly supporting the jamboree.
  • Gilwell Park is the home of Scouting in the UK and is close to both Hylands Park and London. It will be the focus of adventurous activities in the Gilwell Adventure, which is one of the jamboree program venues.
  • The United Kingdom is a diverse and multicultural society that combines tradition with high technology. The UK has the honor of being the country where Sir Robert Baden-Powell founded Scouting. His first experiment was with an encampment on Brownsea Island in 1907 with 22 Scouts from the London area.

Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting in America!

17th National Scout Jamboree

July 26th, - August 4th, 2010

Only years, months, and days left until the 17th National Scout Jamboree!!!

The 2010 National Scout Jamboree will attract thousands of Scouts and leaders, and while it won't be the biggest city in Virginia, it will be the fastest growing on your day of arrival—July 26, 2010! Imagine 17,000 tents and 3,500 patrol kitchens popping up in a matter of hours.

Amid the thousands of colorful tents that will house participants and provide program and support services, there is an infrastructure that provides a safe and secure environment at Fort A. P. Hill. Everything from bus and telephone systems to a hospital and first-aid stations, police and fire departments, post offices, food warehouses, a daily newspaper, and retail stores (trading posts) provide all the support and program services needed for an outstanding event.

Program features reflect the skills of Scouting, our national heritage, physical fitness, environmental conservation, and the true spirit of Scouting.

Daily activities include archery, bikathlon, buckskin games, confidence course, conservation programs, scuba, kayak fun, racing shell run, and raft encounters.

Regional action centers with rappelling towers are truly popular, as are trap shooting, an American Indian village, and the opening and closing arena shows, not to mention daily stage shows and many other activities. It's Scouting and American history at their very best!

Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have completed the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010, but not have reached their 18th birthday by August 4, 2010. All Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must participate in a prejamboree training experience; file a complete Personal Health and Medical Record prior to the prejamboree training; have been active in a troop or team for at least six months prior to July 1, 2010; and be approved by the unit leader and local council.

Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, created the idea of holding a large encampment of Scouts and leaders to celebrate Scouting in England. He called it a jamboree.

Since 1937, the Boy Scouts of America has held a national Scout jamboree for Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout councils throughout the United States. More than 600,000 Scouts and leaders have hiked the trails, paths, and roadways since the first jamboree was held at the base of the Washington Monument on the Mall in our nation's capital.

Since that time, 16 national Scout jamborees have been held. Three were held in the western United States at Irvine Ranch, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Farragut State Park in Idaho. Five have been held in Pennsylvania at Valley Forge and Moraine State Park. Beginning in 1981, Caroline County, Virginia, and Fort A. P. Hill have been the permanent site.
