Scout Sunday

February 4th, 2007

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. Units are encouraged to conduct a Scout Sunday observance on Scout Sunday, or any Sunday in February.

Scout Sunday is celebrated by thousands of scouts each year at Churches & Synagogues across the United States.   The first week of February is often referred to as Scouting Anniversary Week to commemorate the founding of the Boy Scouts of America and the issuing of the National Charter from Congress. The first Sunday in February is called SCOUT SUNDAY (The United Methodist Church recognizes this day on the 2nd Sunday in February.

Units should plan on attending church in full uniform, act as ushers, or participate in some way with their own Church.  It is most appropriate that this be with your chartering organization if it is a church. If your unit is not chartered to a church, make arrangements with a house of worship in your area. Packs, troops, and Venture crews  can join together for this service.  If you want to have your unit charter for presentation at this service, it can be prepared for you. This is also a good time to present religious emblems to boys who have earned them.

Recommendations for Scout Sunday Worship Service

When planning a worship service for Scout Sunday, strive to involve Scouts who are church members. Youth members should be used to sing, usher, greet, pray, and read. Occasionally a youth is allowed to prepare the sermon for this service. At the very least, have the worship committee and the pastor select a date and announce that all members involved in Scouting should wear their uniforms. In turn, each member should be recognized for leadership to others. Most churches plan worship services in advance, so requesting consideration for a Scout Sunday observance far ahead of time might be more successful. If this is a first-time effort, start small and build from there. For those experienced in preparing Scout Sunday functions, try to add something new (for example, using youth speakers or youth Sunday school teachers).

Scout Sunday for 2007, will be February 4th, and we will celebrate this day at the First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn.
